Saleen Brake Issues - Your Thoughts Empty
PostSubject: Saleen Brake Issues - Your Thoughts   Saleen Brake Issues - Your Thoughts I_icon_minitimeSat Mar 03, 2012 3:38 pm

Took out the Saleen today just to run around town and I started smelling my brakes burning. I checked it out and the front right wheel was really hot to the touch. I limped it home and its outside cooling down now. With the car off, I rocked the car back and forth and I can hear the pads rubbing the rotor. So I have to assume that my caliper is stuck. I am not going to tear into this right now, but I am going to have to do it before I take the car anywhere else. Is anyone out there a brake expert? Is a stuck caliper something I can easily fix or will I need to buy a new caliper? I have changed pads before, but never done anything with the caliper besides compressing it for the new pads.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Could be a collapsed brake hose though stuck caliper seems more likely. I've had some success just taking them off and working them around a little with some PB Blaster, but you should be able to get some seals (rebuild kit) and pop the piston(s) out and clean em, mebbe light sand a little, and put the new seals on, if you want a cheaper option. Hope its something easier than a stuck caliper, though.

could be as simple as a stuck slide pin or the pads being froze up in the slides. Honestly if you're gonna do a caliper rebuild, if it was my car, I'd just get a new caliper. It may cost more but a lot less hassle. But like he said, make sure the hose isn't bad as well, a new caliper or rebuild won't do you any good if the hose is bad

Thats true, had a rear caliper go all screwy sideways on an Accord once because the slide pin got rusted somehow. Hope it isn't because that gets painful. Had to replace the whole thing for what that screwed up. Just pull off the wheel and take a close look.

Its sitting for now just because I don't have a lot of time to mess with it. Within the next week or so, I will get the wheel off and check it out. I am likely going to replace the whole caliper at a minimum. It would be nice to upgrade to a new set of brakes if I have it torn down that far. Whats on it is not the upgraded Saleen brake kit, but just the factory ones. This car didn't have that option. They have always been a bit spongy and don't stop like I would want them to. Time to do a bit of research and see what I can get for it.
