The power of E Empty
PostSubject: The power of E   The power of E I_icon_minitimeTue Mar 08, 2011 8:18 pm

So this one company that wrote a tuning program for the LNF (cobalt turbo engine) has finally unlocked the direct injection fuel timing and is able to run 100% E85. So I might be picking this tune up sometime. It's a switchable tune, when car is started normally it will be in "stock gas" tune mode. In this mode I can run my normal 93 oct. When I activated my car's competition mode (button on dash) it will kick the aftermarket E85 tune on so I can fill up on E.

So I was searching for E gas stations in WV and one result is Dulaney Oil Co. LTD. in Westover. Does anyone know if they have a fill up station to buy E there?

Here's where it's located near the Morgantown Mall. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Have no idea. All I have ever seen is 87 at the lowest.

87 octane? I'm talking about E85 ethanol which is the equivalent to ~105 octane. On the E85 search site it only shows it being sold at 2 places in all of WV. It's more readable available in some other states.

E85 is an ethanol. As far as I knew no one in Morgantown had it.

Yeah I wish it would be more available in our state. I could pick up some good whp numbers by just making the switch to E.

Yeah and E85 I think is averaging around $3.10 a gallon which is a lot cheaper than 93.

The only reason I haven't bothered with an E85 tune yet on my car is because of lack of locations in Morgantown to purchase. I would love to put the Sube on the corn.

What are the advantages of E85? Burn slower right? And cheaper....but I thought it can hurt power?

The good thing is I'll have it tuned so I can switch back and forth from E85 and 93 octane with my "dual mode tune".

E85 would be like putting 105 octane gas in your car from the gas station. Higher octane = more power. Plus ethanol burns cooler. And like you said it's cheaper, but it does burn a little faster so your gas mileage won't be as good.

Yep, the On-the-Go station on Jerry Dove and Dulaney both have it. I run it in the Evo and DSM, and have for quite some time. The only thing better is E98 or methanol, you just better have the fuel pump and injectors for it!

What makes it burn faster? The alcohol? I only ask because with conventional gasoline the higher the octane the slower it burns. I would think 105 octane would burn much slower.

It seams like more boosted move to E85 for more power vs N/A cars. Is this due to E85 burning cooler?

Looks like I need to spend an evening researching E85.

My car is direct injection. The tune will raise fuel pressure and change the injection timing to allow E85.

Yeah find a good site explaining it. Lot's of turbo guys go E85 for more power. E85 is called that cause it's 85% ethanol and 15% regular gas. The ethanol is what has the high octane rating and the part that burns quicker so reducing your gas mileage. Hope that helps.

It is a slower burning fuel than standard pump gas Dave, so you were on the right track with the octane rating. Ethanol, in itself, is about a 30-35% less efficient fuel than standard gasoline however, which is where the gas mileage hit comes from. E85/E98 burns extremely cool and, quite literally, will almost never knock. If you're running the car on the edge with it, it's very important to keep an eye on the plugs for signs of detonation. You can do some extensive damage to a piston without ever seeing any problem in the logs just from sheer heat. E85 also doesn't have a problem with running 12.5 or higher gasoline AFR's. Don't be scared to run it leaner than you would on standard gas, it loves it.

^ See I still don't know all the facts about E85. I just wish it was more available in this state.

Yep, that's where I normally get E85 from and they do have a pump that is operated by an attendant. They get out of there at around 4:30. The only problem is that Mike, the owner, is only legally supposed to sell E85 to true flex fuel vehicles. He really didn't want to sell any to me until we talked race cars for a while and now it is just on a hush, hush basis. You may try it, but don't mention me! I need somewhere to get E85 .
