PostSubject: Where did you get your start (car wise)?   Mon Feb 21, 2011 11:05 pm

I always think this is a fun little topic for car forums. As the title states, where did you get your start?
Is your current car your first? Do you have a stable of many? Is this your second, third, fourth? Obviously there are a lot of different rides/styles and I just wonder how each person ended up where they are today in the car world.

My current ride is an 06 WRX. This is actually my second car that I have chosen to mod and the third to ever enter my stable (My third is a 1940 Dodge Special).

My first car actually came to me when I was in high school. I raced go-karts and actually sold one kart to purchase my first car a 1998 base model Chevy Cavalier. I purchased it in February of 2001 and actually owned it until April of 2008. At that time I was driving down the highway (when I still lived in KY) a boulder shifted on the mountain, and crushed my car underneath it as I was driving. Needless to say I parted it out, and stepped away from the car world for nearly two years until I picked up my WRX.

This car started with a drop and rims. It progressed to bolt-ons and nitrous. Then I re-did it top to bottom (32 way adjustable suspension, HIDS, etc). I ended up with a parts lists a mile long and a car that I would only drive on nice days. Though it was a Cavalier I do still miss it. One thing you will notice is I try to keep my cars clean. Exterior wise it was 90% OEM parts off of other Cavaliers, and I never got into the trend of underbodies, vinyl, etc. I'm not hating, but to each their own.

Anyways, here it is, and as the topic states, where did you guys get your start?

haha, my first was a 1991 Ford Probe GT. The one I took the furthest was a 96 Dodge Neon, until it died an untimely death going up Cheat Mountain... I'll have to see if I can dig up a few pics

Car looks good wagon...

My cars started off as an F100 that I traded my atv for when I was 15, before I had even gotten my license I sold it and took the money, added some to it, and bought a 95 eclipse. I drove that for a while, then the valve seats went bad, traded it in on an extreme s-10 with a paxton supercharger, totalled that racing my cousin's probe, and yes, I was winning.. I was so far ahead of him, he didnt see me loose control and flip it over a hill. From there I drove my dad's van for a while until I was able to purchase a Beretta, drove it for a while, bought a honda civic, the ex wife took it in the divorce. (she ran off while I was deployed) then I came home, bought an explorer, drove it.. then to a F350 and then to an F150 which I still have.. Currently I have the 2005 F150, a 2002 Yamaha R1 Motorcycle, a 1984 Arrowglass boat 275hp, a 2007 Pontiac solstice, a 2011 Jeep grand cherokee and a 2008 HD Chevy truck.

Thats my list.. sorry I took so long babbleing..

and come to think about it... that neon is the whole reason I got into the auto industry as a whole. I took it to Goodyear to get it worked on and Goodyear is the first place I worked as a tech... then onward and upward I guess lol.

to start off that cavy is very clean looking and no one dose them like that anymore sorry to see it gone.

i started off in a 1991 Mazda 626 i got it for free and it needed so much work done, but i didn't care cause i wasn't riding the bus to school anymore.

then i got a 95 civic for 3000 and it was very clean and also got lucky cause it had the rear disk brake conversion, i did so many mods to that car it had a full body kit, that i got for 1200 (not fiberglass) new 17s and all chrome air ride, and the list goes on.

but got board with it and traded it off for a 91 240sx that i wanted for a long time, when i got it it was an auto and converted it to a 5 speed got into drifting for a few months, then trade it off for a JDM del sol with the stock b16 and also had a 1.6 del sol, after owning them for some time sold them both and moved out to California for about 6 months.

when i moved back i needed a car and a friend of mine sold me his 91 MR2, with a sun roof and it was auto after about a year it started over heating so by that time he had a 93 MR2 with t tops and 5 speed, after about a year he sold me that car also i couldn't pass up the price for it and it had stuff already done, it just needed some TLC and now its getting re done for the 4th and maybe last time. also had a 94 integra / 91 civic hatch / 93 civic / 97 s10 start of a mini but sold it

I started with a 73 Nova. It was candy apple red with chrome trim and a 350. Man I wish I still had it. Then I had a 89 daytona with ground effects and 17" wheels. Moved to a 88 honda accord. 5% tint and 4 cerwin vega 15" subs. It beat that car to death! I loved it. Bought my 82 s-10 in 2002. That week I dropped it 6" in the front and 7" in the rear. about 8 months of getting my guts beat out I started bagging it. I didnt know anyone with air ride, just saw it on tv. There may have been one or 2 in the area. I was buying stuff that didnt suit my needs, just cause I had no idea! My truck has been bagged for 9 years and was daily driven for about 6. I bought a 98 achieva (papa ride) for a daily. 2.5% tint and 2 magma 15" subs. sold that and bought a 98 bravada. Iv had 2 15"s, 4 12"s, and now it has 2 treo 18"s subs. It has 22" chrome wheels. This is now my daily when Im not driving the company truck. I also have the limo, 89 lincoln towncar. Just shy of 30' ft and bagged with 10 switches.
So from where I started to where I am now........ 2 different worlds haha

I got into the car scene because my boss of 16 years was a real car guy who bought a 51 Jag that he restored most of it himself. He always talked to me about cars and shared his monthly issues of Road and Track. Normally a car was just transportation for me although I loved my cars - I never modified any of them. When I decided to purchase a new car and the gas prices were just starting to increase, I decided to go with something that would be easy on gas. I had driven Chevy and Fords since 1978 and decided I wanted to try an import. My cousin, uncle and boss were die hard Honda guys. So I got on my first car forum Fit Freaks International to learn more about the Fit and that was 02/07. I got my car in May 2007 after waiting 3 months for it to come from Japan. This car made me happy and I have to blame the Fit Freakers for loving to modified this car. When I got it, simple modifications - Mugen window visors and neck pillows. I think this Honda woke up my inner tuner because once I started I could not stop. I subscribed to Honda Tuning and Modified - I joined local car forums and got to know a bunch of awesome guys and gals who were just as passionate about their cars as I was. Speed channel became my favorite thing to watch. I started learning more about the workings of the car and found that learning more was exciting to me. I decided to enter my first car show at a Scion sponsored show on Magic Island and the Fit won Best Import - I was totally surprised by the win and can never forget calling my Mom to say, Hey We won Best Import and her saying, "Is that good?" LOL! I never let my age stand in the way of doing what I did with my car. My neighbors have finally stopped asking me if there is anything wrong with my car when the hood is up and I am detailing the engine bay and I enjoy spending time in my garage working on the car. I hope to show the Fit one more year and then if my osteoarthritis in my knees doesn't get too bad - I hope to one day find a CRX to restore and become my show car. I can't think of anything more fun than being in my 60's showing a tuned out Honda!

My first car was a 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car replica that I bought new. I picked up a ratty 73 pinto for a beater. I was young and stupid and wrecked the Mustang and picked up a basket case 1970 Boss 302 that had been sitting in a yard for quite awhile. I restored it and moved up to a 77 Pinto beater and then a 1980 Fiesta. I sold the Boss which was really stupid seeing how much they are worth now and spent some years driving boring cars. I traded the Fiesta in for a 88 Festiva and then traded it for a 92 Toyota Paseo, my first non Ford. An old guy smashed my Paseo with his Jeep and I found the 93 MR2. It's the first one I'd ever seen and had to have it after one test drive. I bought it and a 91 Festiva for a beater. I spent a couple of years tweaking the MR2 and started looking for a first generation supercharged. I found a nice low miles 89 SC and added it to the collection. The Festiva rusted out and I picked up a 92 Corolla for my current beater. The Corolla takes all the abuse and the 93 MR2 is my main weekend car. The 89SC gets driven on special occasions.

my first car cost $400 it was a 86' ford escort with ground effects on it, drove that for a little while then i sold it and bought a 90' Dodge Shadow, sold it a couple months after that and picked up my first f-body which was an 87' pontiac firebird w/ t-tops and dad and I painted it and put the birds on (i think i have pics), also while i had the firebird my current boss (not boss at the time) gave me a 91' F-150 that was a field truck and had to start with a screwdriver (lol) but was a beast to play in, then i traded the truck in and sold the firebird to by a 98' Dodge Stratus where I started modding- had a body kit installed and sound system installed and 20% windown tint all around, then after college and when i was getting married i thought i would need a 4wd and traded the car in on a 97' Chevy Blazer that only had 50,000 miles on it- kept it for that winter and found my 2nd f-body which was my baby- 01' Chevy Camaro Convertible that I did quite a few mods to and had it to about where i wanted it before i got the itch for my current baby- 2010 camaro which i have plenty of plans for but no money- i also have an 03' trailblazer ext, and 09' gmc 2500HD, and my wife has a 07' Cobalt LT

My first car was a black (with hot pink writing) 1993 Geo Tracker soft-top. Got it my junior year of high school and thought I was hot shit in that thing. LOL!

To make it brief, I can remember my first car was a '91 Ford Tempo with the 4 wheel drive option. What a disaster. Drove my parents 2000 Mercury Mystique while in college and bought my first car after college which was a '01 Mustang V6. It was a fun little car, but sucked in winter weather so I traded it in for a '05 Ford Ranger. Kept this for 2 years and got the itch to get something slightly bigger so I bought a 07 Tacoma. Purchased the Saleen as my "toy" almost a year ago and a month ago traded in the Tacoma on a 2011 Tundra Crewmax Limited.

First truck was a old Nissan I paid $25 for when I was 9. Dad did some work for a guy and the guy said he wanted to just give me the truck but dad wanted to teach me resposibility or some crap. lol Thats what I learned to drive a standard on. It was a "farm use only" truck.
My first real car was a '91 Celica GT when I was 16. What a great car. Sold it to my buddy when I was 25 for $500.
When I was 23 I bought a '00 FRC Corvette. Had lambo doors, flowmasters, and intake. Fun car but I totaled it 3 hours before I was leaving for vacation.
At 26 I bought a '06 C6 base. Full blackout kit with black-chrome wheels, vararam intake, ported TB, and B&B exhaust. Sold it last year when my buddy borrowed it to take a hot chick on a date. Well he got 5 min down the road and called me and ask "how much?". It wasnt for sale, I loved the car and didnt want to sell it. He insisted and told me he wasnt bringing it back until I gave him a price. Well he talked me into it. Now I go the Z06 and couldnt be happier.
