Autocross: Who has done it?

Not me, so who has...

Not this guy. Id love to take the saab out for it at least once though...

Would be fun....just not sure if I want to put the Z through that abuse.

i did it once in north carolina in an all electric mazda it was pretty fun, didn't win thought i was going to roll the car on my last pass

I have watched these guys put on a autocross. They use to go to elkins twice a year but not anymore.

I never raced but I did ride along a few times and it was pretty crazy

i have auto crossed for 3 years.
first with my 99 legacy L.
now my LGT
Won first in my class in 2010

Man, looks like the tires are gonna roll right off the rims, you was cutting it hard there huh?
I have never done it, can you explain to us how its done, the concept, rules.. etc?

Great pic btw, shows how aggressive your car is in the turns.

they basic setup is a track (parking lot), cones, and timers.

pull up to the start beam and when they wave the flag GO!
if you knock a cone (pylon) our of its box you get a penalty.

the simple goal is to go through the course in the quickest line possible. with each run you get a time and you try to beat that time on your next lap. at the end of the day your quickest time will be noted and counted.

the classes go in a wide range from stock to fully built in a series that breaks into 2 parts. street tires and race tires (slicks).
example my class is STU or Street Tire Unlimited- street tires, modified suspension, and altered Horsepower/torque.

its really challenging and a huge stress relief! id suggest this to parents that wanna get their kids involved into the car scene as an alternate to street racing as well as build confidence behind the wheel in unforseen situations on the road.

due to my experience i feel more confident on "spirited" drives up hawks nest and whatnot as well as my passengers NEVER feel discomfort when they ride with me.

there are many driving styles for different vehicles.. example a small MR2 is nimble and would have more focus on the quickest and tightest line at a constant speed whereas my LGT needs a lot of torque and more aggressive driving in the turns due to its length and weight.

Thanks for posting that Scooby, how does Solstices do there? ever seen one autocross? I see them drift all the time, but never watched or been around autocross. I would like to get my wife into it, would it hurt to do it on 20" wheels, or should we use the stock 18's if we were gonna do it, I know the stock 18's are about half the weight.

honestly ive never seen one run before but where their little it should do great! just depends on how much weight you have over the rear(drive) wheels... wheelspin is a big killer in autox thats why i love my AWD haha. id deff suggest doing it on the stock wheels or wheels that you wont mind getting a little rash on because as much as we try to prep and clear the track surface its never gonna be perfect. thats why i NEVER run my Rotas when i autox..their too pretty and $$$ to ruin lol

I hear ya, the car has a 50/50 weight distribution, but not sure what the weight on the rear is, I know it will fry the tires on demand, so it will probably fish tail bad in those turns huh?

Wife only has two speeds, lead foot or feather foot, no in between.

The first autocross I went to I got to ride with a guy that had a 99 or 2000 corvette with slicks on all 4 tires. The first thing he did was turn the t/c off.. then he looked at me and said "your kinda tall you are gonna bounce your head off the roof"
good thing I had a helmet on
But he had been doing autocoss's for sometime. When we finished the course he asked me what I thought, all I could say is "your nuts" but it was alot of fun

by chance was the car silver? odie cantley? lol his daughter is my best friend.

Odie is pretty cool he goes to the parkersburg event. That's the only one I do until they get anoer location besides the High School. I have run every parkersburg airport events and did the Yeager airport one a couple years ago, the one we all did at least 80 coming to the finish. I started running the street mod class(sm2) which then turned into SSM and this year will be in SMF. I run a Hoosier r6 tire.

I have auto-x a few times. It is very fun but just wish there was some closer events. June 4th they will be at the pburg airport and I will be there!
