| This one's been in the mail for awhile now, but it turns out the rumors are true: the tightening of emissions regs and fleet mpg requirements will spell the death of Mazda's rotary engine, which will end production next June. In the meantime, Mazda is releasing a final JDM-only special edition ofthe RX-8, the Spirit R, and the 1,000 units produced will be among the last of their kind. Mazda CEO Takashi Tamanouchi says, "Although production is ending, the rotary engine will always represent the spirit of Mazda. And Mazda remains committed to its ongoing development." RIP, but from the sound of it, not permanently. Via Carscoop. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] | |

| My boss has a mid 80's RX-7 with the rotary in it. That thing is pretty sweet. You really have to keep it revved up for it to be happy. | |
